Located southwest of Lake Van, the natural port of Tatvan was once an important stop on the Silk Road. The area was home to some of the largest caravanserais in Anatolia, and there are some interesting historical cemeteries. Today, the modernized city offers a host of services along its main thoroughfare. The few tourists are attracted by the surroundings of Lake Van and the crater of Mount Nemrut. The town also serves as a winter dormitory for the Bitlis ski season, 10 km away (Bitlis Çiftkaya Kayak Merkezi). On the road between Tatvan and Van, south of the lake, get dropped off in front of the iskele for Akdamar Island.
