Santiago is a village that lives on livestock and agriculture. The reduction, originally located on the banks of the Rio Apá, moved to its present location in 1669, to escape the bandeirantes. Only the ruins of the reduction, abandoned after the expulsion of the missionaries in 1767, remain, but the present church preserves the only complete Jesuit altarpiece in the country. Around the large central square, several casas de indios are still standing, and the museum exhibits beautiful wood paintings (rare) and beautiful polychrome sculptures. Finally, Santiago is nicknamed the Capital de la Tradición Misionera. Every year, at the end of January, there is a big traditional festival that attracts thousands of people.
