Willkommen! Colonia Independencia, or simply Independencia, is a former agricultural colony that developed from 1919, with the settlement of German immigrants who left their country after the war. Other Germans, but also Swiss and Austrians, arrived later, in what became a district, with a municipality. It is located in Melgarejo, the urban area of Independencia. In the centre there is a stone church and a beautiful park of 3 hectares, where you can bathe in natural pools along the Arroyo Tacuará. People make their living from agriculture, but also from tourism. The proximity of the Yvytyruzý mountain range and beautiful waterfalls, such as the Salto Suizo, or the Salto Cantera, attract nature lovers. The most anticipated event of the year is the Oktoberfest! The beer festival takes place the last week of October. It is the opportunity to taste homemade beers and Germanic gastronomic specialties with Paraguayan sauce. But Independencia also produces wine. It is the only place in the country where there is real production in Paraguay. Don't expect great vintages though... Prost!
