Like Osh, the country's third-largest city is predominantly Uzbek. Its relaxed atmosphere makes it more akin to the Uzbek towns of the Ferghana Valley than to "hectic" Osh, and in no way reveals its character as a provincial capital. Unlike other Kyrgyz cities, Djalalabad is not a former garrison town, and its street plan has retained its medieval layout, dating back to the time when a wall, of which no trace remains, protected its inhabitants. The winding streets make orientation more difficult than in the military's checkerboard layout, but offer more charm!
