Between Toktogul and Kara Kul, the road skirts the artificial lake, offering sumptuous scenery. The town, where almost all the inhabitants work on the dam, is not unbearable, but of little interest. Past KaraKul, the road follows the Naryn through deep, narrow gorges; the waters, held back by another dam downstream, have risen, drowning the old road that can sometimes be seen on the opposite bank. The terrain then becomes gentler as the road winds its way through the Kyrgyz Ferghana to Djalalabad and Osh. If your final destination is Lake Sary Chelek, drop off at the Tachkomur avtovagzal.
