Toktogul is a new town. The construction of the reservoir in the early 1970s drowned the old town, and the whole valley with it. The 100,000 or so people who lived there were moved to the new town, or to Kara-Koul and the surrounding region. For the most part farmers, accustomed to a rich soil, they found themselves on land with little potential for cultivation; their roots and way of life have been lost, but they can still drown their melancholy in the superb artificial lake. Activities are relatively limited, and the lake is usually explored only as a lunch stop for cabs on the road between Bishkek and Osh.
