The Hârşova site is exceptional by the stratigraphy of the chalcolithiques habitats forming this tell-up which is 14 metres high. A Franco-Romanian archaeological cooperation programme was established on the site in 1993, involving archaeologists from the National museum of Romania's History Museum, the Museum of National History and Archaeology of Constanta and French researchers. They made it possible to update a monumental door of the ancient and Byzantine citadel. A small museum contains rich collections, most of which stem from the excavations carried out. The bulk of the objects presented relate to the Culture of Gumelnita, i. e. to the Chalcolithique (circa 4200 BC). The ouillage retrace the way of life of this bucolic community located on the edge of the Danube. The exploitation of the resources of the river (fishing) and rypisylve (hunting, shellfish collection…) characterizes the economy of these sedentary societies.
