A town of 7,000 souls, Gilford is a small summer resort, a favourite haunt of outdoor enthusiasts. Its inhabitants enjoy privileged access to nature. Among the must-see attractions are the Ellacoya State Park and the Gunstock Outdoor Base. Gilford is also home to Kimball Castle, a medieval castle in the heart of a vast estate that has overlooked the lake since it was built in 1894 by Benjamin Kimball, a wealthy director of a railway company who made it his summer residence. The astonishing building was abandoned and fell into disrepair in the 1960s. Today it is possible to sleep in the cottage next to the castle, where the caretaker used to live.
