Soanierana is a large town with 24-hour electricity and a modest port from which shuttles run to Sainte-Marie, and is best known for these crossings. You can also take a day trip up the Maharibona River in a pirogue and visit the clove tree distilleries. tamatave is 160 km away on a tarmac road in poor condition. Fénérive is around 60 km away. Soanierana is the starting point for the shuttle service to Sainte-Marie: small rowboats still exist, but safety is uncertain and we advise against this adventure. We prefer Cap Sainte-Marie, Melissa Express, Sainte-Marie Tours and Blue Marine (El Condor).
