Mananara is an essential stopover for any traveller on the RN 5. But only a stopover... Note that Mananara Nord National Park is more easily accessible from Antanambe or Sahasoa, further south. The Andavakandrehy cave in Ambalatrano (17 km south of Mananara), a sacred site listed as a cultural heritage site, lies 200 metres underground. It houses a Betsimisaraka necropolis of fifty finely crafted sarcophagi. Each sarcophagus contains between seven and ten bodies. The place is an enigma, as the identity of the deceased is unknown. The Betsimisaraka are said to have used this necropolis for over 600 years.
