Maroantsetra is a small town of around 40,000 inhabitants, surrounded by greenery, facing Antongil Bay, 100 km north of Mananara. It's also the end of the road from Tamatave. There are no roads to Antalaha, only footpaths and mountain bike trails. The sea is all around. The region's potential. The tourist potential of this region is prodigious. But there's no doubt that Cape Masoala would otherwise be one of the Grande Ile's most popular tourist destinations. Endless beaches of fine sand, sumptuous landscapes, preserved traditional culture, humpback whale watching in season (July-September)... there's something for everyone. Are we going to complain about this lack of tourism? For a tour guide, it would be a bit like the pot calling the kettle black. But let's face it: this feeling of being at the end of the world, these wild expanses, these incomparable wonders delivered for our eyes alone - there's something exhilarating about it that we'd all like to keep, quite selfishly. In town, we visit the artisanal shipbuilding yard and the vanilla preparation and weaving workshops. We also visit a number of basket-making villages, such as Marogisa and Ambodivoafaho. The Vodiriana waterfall (to the south) and Lake Mahevarano (to the east) are also worth a visit.Maroantsetra is Madagascar's rainiest town, with an average of 4,300 mm of rain per year: get equipped!
