Ampanihy is organized around the market place. Bars, gargotes, restaurants, hardware stores form a vast square there. The market takes place on Saturday morning. The specialty of the city is the weaving of mohair carpets from angora goats. The Mohair Mallet workshop can be visited: about forty women weave sumptuous carpets every day. Near Ampanihy, the forest bordering the Menarandra River is populated with lemurs. Everywhere, baobabs and tombs punctuate the landscape. By the way, go and see at about 22 km from there an absolutely gigantic baobab (the most impressive of all Madagascar), of 28 m of circumference!
