Ejeda is a pleasant little town. The Friday market(zoma) is a lively affair, with all the surrounding tracks bringing cohorts of carts and long lines of villagers from neighbouring hamlets, laden with merchandise. According to some, the town's name derives from the French word "adjudant", as a particularly ferocious adjudant plagued the area during the colonial period. Ejeda is most famous throughout Madagascar for its gold and ruby mines, which have been exploited for over a century. Today, the descendants of the local kings pass on the gesture and lessons of this exploitation.
