A small fishing village, Itampolo is the last coastal stopover before the long drive to Lavanono. Here, the sea is the main attraction... The village is bordered by a superb beach swept by winds to the rhythm of the sea crashing against the rocks. This is Mahafaly country, characterized by tombs that resound like hymns to life. You'll find real mausoleums painted in bright colors contrasting with the ground (Mahafaly funerary art). You'll also see sculpted funerary posts that seem to recount the earthly life of the deceased. According to local legends, these are the Aloalo that perpetuate the flow of life.
