Situated 81 km from Kédougou, Salémata is the big village of the area, a meeting point for the Bassari and Fulani of the region. It is accessible by a track, damaged on some parts. It takes a good two hours with a good 4X4. It's also the point where you can get water, sweets, biscuits... before going up to the isolated villages on the hills. While there are shops all over Senegal, you will have to be careful before going to the Bassari villages. The same goes for electricity, which is extremely rare beyond Salémata. The village also houses a Catholic mission, a small church and also... a fortified castle!
