This wildlife park is part of a complex called the Niokolo Badiar complex, which extends to Guinea. This complex includes the 913,000 ha transboundary park and the classified forests of Ndama and South Badiar. Since 1954, part of this complex, the Niokolo Koba National Park, has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Biosphere Reserve. Today, the entire complex has been included in the UNESCO list of Biosphere Reserves. The park is an area of contrasting relief, crossed all along by the Gambia River and two of its tributaries, the Niokolo Koba and the Koulountou. There are more than 70 species of mammals, 329 species of birds, 36 species of reptiles, 20 species of amphibians and a large number of invertebrates. Lions, reputed to be the largest in Africa despite their reduced mane, are the stars of the park, as well as Derby Elands, the largest antelopes on the list of endangered animals. Other important species are also present: antelope, elephant, leopard, buffalo, spotted hyena, chimpanzee, crocodile, mongoose, wild dog and jackal. Nevertheless, all kinds of animals can be seen here: gambian goose, hippopotamus, bateleur eagle, kingfisher, harnessed guib, paradise flycatcher, fisher eagle, cobe defassa, sacred ibis, hippotrague, crowned crane, vulture, jaribu, duiker, patas, guinea fowl, Grimm's silvicapre, great Abyssinian hornbill... The richness of the habitats must be noted, as well as the diversity of the flora, which is important with more than 1,500 species of plants.
