Nestled at an altitude of 2,200 m, Trongsa is a major settlement. The3rd King of Bhutan, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, was born here in 1928. Businesses are run by Tibetans exiled here since the 1950s-1960s (after China's invasion of Tibet), who have taken Bhutanese nationality. In the beginning, Trongsa was just a dzong with a few traditional houses. It was only in 1982, when the old village was razed and rebuilt, that it began to develop. The town is famous for its fortress and for its strategic location between western and eastern Bhutan, separated by the Himalayan peaks, notably the Black Mountains.
