Biratnagar is Nepal's sixth most populous city, with around 245,000 inhabitants, who make their living from a few processing industries and agri-food activities. The city is characterized by disorder and pollution, and has grown too fast for its cultural or tourist appeal. The region's main crop is jute, a low-value-added product that is exported at low cost to the big neighbor to the south, mainly to make bags. The only interest in passing through, or rather landing there by plane, is to visit the Koshi Tappu national park, about 1 hour's drive from this large city.
