Greyabbey (population 950) owes its name to the Cistercian abbey built in 1193 in the eastern part of the village. It was built by Affreca, wife of John de Courcy, in gratitude for her survival after a stormy sea crossing from her native Isle of Man. The site is important because it was the first Gothic-style building in Ulster, with high pointed windows. Otherwise, the town's main interest lies in the Hoops Courtyard, off the main street, which houses several fine antique stores. A great place to pick up a souvenir of your trip!
