This small town of about 8,500 inhabitants was founded in 1859, following the installation of a U.S. Army base. Located 500 km from San Antonio and 175 km from the entrance to Big Bend National Park, Fort Stockton was then developed through agricultural installations and, in particular, from 1877 onwards, an irrigation system that made it one of the best endowed areas in Texas in this respect. Surrounded by ranches, the town does not present any major tourist interest, even if its fort is worth a look, but it can constitute an interesting stopover before heading to Big Bend National Park, or continuing on to the next town.
