On the way to Big Bend National Park, Alpine is often a must-see overnight stop. Alpine is in Brewster County. Established as a town in 1882, Alpine is now a major center, equidistant from Marfa, Fort Davis and Marathon. Although only populated by 6,000 residents, the village offers plenty to do for those willing to spend a day or two there. Less hipster and New York than neighboring Marfa, and at the same time less historic than Fort Davis, and also less lost than Marathon: Alpine cultivates its own identity. It is truly authentic with its hippies, its Hispanic community, its stores and restaurants, its university (Sul Ross State University), its murals, its small movie theater and its train station. A whole local life that watches the days go by quietly. In the surrounding area, the magic of the desert works, as when, at the end of the day, from the top of the Big Hill, you can see the sun setting over the valley. Located on a high plateau in the Chihuahua Desert, to the north are the Davis Mountains and to the south are the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park. There is an airport at one end of town, as well as many hotels and good restaurants. We recommend taking a look at the Brewster County Court House, built in 1888 by Tom Lovell, with an interesting architecture. Also worth noting is the Museum of the Big Bend.
