Presidio, a land of history where the Apache and Comanche Indians regularly confronted the Spanish explorers, then the settlers who became Mexican, before having to flee before the power of the American forces after the war with Mexico. Early on, U.S. generals realized the value of establishing a military post on the mountain to control the region. Presidio is located at the junction of Highway 67, which connects it to civilization and Marfa, and Highway 170, which more or less skilfully follows the Rio Grande River to lead into the wilderness of the beautiful Big Bend State Park, before reaching the sumptuous Big Bend National Park. We recommend to everyone to drive this road 170, offering a sumptuous and very photogenic landscape. Now that the border is clearly defined between Mexico and the United States, Presidio has lost all geostrategic interest, but this small village of 4,000 inhabitants, which turns into a furnace at noon in summer, seduces by an atmosphere of its own. On the other side of the Rio Grande, on the Mexican side, is the town of Ojinaga. Presidio offers several lodging options, and can serve as a nice stop on your way out (or in) of Big Bend National Park. Here, it feels more like Mexico than the United States, and its Hispanic past is strongly felt.
