The traveler who takes the magnificent Route 170 along the Rio Grande cannot miss the moment when Lajitas reveals itself on its way. At least, what is left of it, because, with its 200 inhabitants, the small village is one of the ghost towns of Texas. In the past, a military post had been installed there to counter the Mexican assaults and protect the mining activity of the Big Bend region. The interest of Lajitas, today, is to serve as a rear base for both the Big Bend Ranch State Park, which stretches between Lajitas and Presidio to the west, and its big brother the Big Bend National Park, directly to the east.
