With a population of just under 2,000, Johnson City is the perfect example of a typical Hill Country village. And, most importantly, it is the northern starting point of the wine route, Route 290. It starts in Johnson City and goes to Fredericksburg, about 30 miles to the west. It is in this region of Texas that the largest quantity of wine in the state is produced. Johnson City is dear to the hearts of Texans. Note that, Lyndon B. Johnson, former president of the United States, lived here for many years even though he was born and died in the nearby town of Stonewall. The city is named after James Polk Johnson, his grandfather's uncle.
