Boone is a charming little town in the north of the region. Its name refers to the explorer Daniel Boone (1734-1820), the popular hero of the United States, one of the pioneers of the push towards the West, who set up his camp in the area on several occasions. The city is the capital of this part of the Appalachians. It is home to Appalachian State University, and the large number of students residing there gives it a certain dynamism. In the 1960s, its streets welcomed many musicians from the region who wanted to make themselves known, including the famous Doc Watson (1923-2012), a true icon of traditional Appalachian music. Boone is located in the immediate vicinity of popular mountain ranges, such as Grandfather Mountain, and ski resorts, which operate in winter. It therefore attracts a large number of nature-loving tourists every year who come to hike and raft, or simply to recharge their batteries in the open air.
