Atacames was also impacted by the 2016 earthquake and its aftershocks. Many establishments had to close their doors... And for some never reopened. Its immense grey sand beach stretches over 4 km, inviting you to laze around. In high season (from July to mid-September, between Christmas and New Year's Day, in February at Carnival time and at Easter), the party is in full swing all night long, until the early hours of the morning, and people drink Cocoloco, a local cocktail. Atacamès attracts both Ecuadorians who come to party during their weekends or holidays, as well as foreigners. The rest of the year, Atacames is very quiet. Many places only open in season.During the day, you get a tan and enjoy the pleasures of the beach in a tropical atmosphere, but which has nothing typically Ecuadorian. Atacames stretches along the Malecón (sea front) and has a few streets perpendicular to the beach; it is easy to find your way. The animation is concentrated on the Malecón. And then like many tourist places, Atacames knows its share of small delinquency. At the risk of disappointing romantics, at night it is best to avoid unlit areas away from the beach. Local handicrafts include black and red coral jewellery, or made from coconut husks. The surrounding coastal villages, quieter and more authentic like Sua, Same or Mompiche (our favorite on the coast!), are worth a visit.
