The oldest domestic city in the United States is 71 miles west of Philadelphia, just over one hour's drive from Philadelphia. To the north and west of Lancaster flows through the Susquehanna River. The Germans were the first to settle in and around Lancaster in 1709. In 1729, the city became the capital of the county. It was English John Wright who gave him his name, referring to the city of the same name in England.
