The historic capital of Ayrshire and the largest city in southern Scotland, Ayr was officially founded in 1205. It hosted the first session of the Scottish Parliament in 1315, but is most famous for Robert Burns, Scotland's most famous bard, who was born in 1759 in Alloway. It attracts many people from the surrounding area for its shopping, its university, but also its long beach that stretches along its west coast. However, there are not many tourist activities and it mainly attracts literature lovers. You will have to leave the center to discover the architectural heritage of its hinterland.
