Although it is the fifteenth most populous town in Scotland, Kilmarnock is notably known for being the birthplace of Johnnie Walker whisky. Although you won't be able to visit the distillery, as it closed in 2012 after 192 years of operation, the town and its surroundings are worth a visit and are full of interesting historical, natural and cultural sites: Dean Castle, the Burns Monument Centre, the Dick Institute (gallery and museum), Dundonald Castle, its parks (Kay Park, Howard Park) and its viaduct. The city center is very pleasant, with many independent stores. Kilmarnock FC is the oldest professional club in Scotland.
