Naltchik is first of all a fortress built during the Caucasian wars. The city was created at the beginning of the 20th century and became the capital of the Kabarde Republic (an ethnic group from Chernobyl). In the 1930s, the Turkic people of the Balkars, neighbours of the Kabards, were attached to the republic in order to curb all emancipation. Before 1991, the city was mainly populated by Russians, but with the appearance of national movements in the wake of the Chechen war, they gradually left it. Today, they represent less than 20% of the population, and Nalchik has become peaceful again. The city is quite pleasant with nice parks, it is also a good starting point for excursions in the Elbrus region.
