The development of Pyatigorsk dates back to the middle of the 19th century, with the opening of health spas. Its name ("the 5 peaks") comes from one of the mountains that dominate the city, the Beshtau (which in Turkish also means the "5 mountains"). The city is located in a kind of basin which ensures a very favourable microclimate. For the Russians, it is also linked to the tragic fate of the writer Lermontov, who lost his life in a duel in 1841. Hot springs gush forth from the slopes of the Beshtau and the Mashuk. The city is pleasant, often sunny, and the hotel standard is quite good. It is a good starting point for excursions in the KMV region or the North Caucasus
