Halfway between Pyatigorsk and Kislovodsk, this peaceful little town can be visited on a day trip. It is reached by train, which takes 30 minutes from either city. Essentuki was originally a Cossack village founded by General Ermolov. The springs there were soon noticed as beneficial and their exploitation developed. There are many sanatoriums in the town, some of which date from the late 19th century, but most of the old buildings were rebuilt after the 1930s. Essentuki is also known in the rest of the country for its sparkling mineral water, recognizable by its green bottle.
