This is a beautiful island and is popular with cyclists because its 45 km "Island Explorer" loop is an ideal route, with quiet, well-developed roads and spectacular views. The terrain is not flat, but the hills are never very steep. The southern coast is particularly pretty, with its road undulating over citrus orchards and the sea. And Omishima, against all odds, is also home to several museums and spaces dedicated to modern and contemporary art! These include Ken Iwata's "Mother and Child Museum" (an open-air sculpture), a museum about the renowned architect Toyo Ito and the Tokoro Museum, on the hillside, dedicated to contemporary art. A true place of history, the traveler will also find one of the most important shrines in Japan, as well as the most remarkable collection of armors and samurai weapons in the country! Finally, the development of several cafes and restaurants along the road will allow tired cyclists to take some well-deserved breaks!
