The charming town of Hikone borders the shores of Lake Biwa, 75 kilometres north-east of Kyoto. Two must-sees make the town a recommended stop in Shiga Prefecture: its castle, a jewel of preserved heritage, and its peaceful Genkyu-en garden. The surroundings of the castle are very pleasant to visit on foot, as well as the adjacent streets with their small shops. The Yume street Kyōbashi bathes in an atmosphere inspired by the Edo period. Do not miss the meeting with Hikonyan. This mascot, which represents a white cat with a samurai helmet, was invented in 2007 to mark the 400th anniversary of the foundation of the castle.
