The second most populous city in the county, it can be reached via the Ventura Freeway 101, then the famous Pacific Coast Highway - Highway 1. A clean, wealthy little gem, Santa Barbara offers a glimpse of American-style luxury, as seen in the soap opera of the same name. The town is also famous for its red-tiled roofs, which stand out against the tropical greenery. The reason: the 1925 earthquake, which virtually destroyed the entire Spanish town. The municipality decided to harmonize the buildings and opted for a return to the Mediterranean colonial style, with its pink or orange rendered houses, arcades and patios. More recently, Santa Barbara has made a name for itself with its Wine Country, a hinterland where wine production flourishes around the small village of Los Olivos. It's an idyllic setting for a day of wine tasting and a taste of the Californian way of life.
