The self-proclaimed "Mussel Capital of the World", this town of 8,035 inhabitants belongs to the so-called "Five Cities" group, of which there are actually only three: Grover Beach, Arroyo Grande and Pismo Beach. The name Pismo comes from the chumash, meaning "tar", which the Indians used to coat their tomols (canoes) with to make them watertight. The reason: they found it in a canyon close to the beach. Today, you can sunbathe, play volleyball and fish from the wooden pontoon. Stop off at one of the restaurants near the waterfront to try the Californian clam chowder, a cockle soup served in hollow bread.
