Statue of Guido Gezelle, housed in the house where he was born, with a museum retracing the life and work of this local figure.
Since 1930, the statue of Flemish priest and poet Guido Gezelle (1830-1899) has stood in the center of the square that bears his name. He was one of the first to give Flemish its rightful place in the language, which until then had been considered a regional patois and a secondary language. The written language was French. But Guido Gezelle, through his poems, brought out the beauty and sonorities of the Flemish language. A museum retracing the life and work of this local personality is housed in his birthplace in the Sainte-Anne district.
