Its Greek name derives from Corion Elaion, the "garden of oil". Corigliano Calabro is the second largest town in the province and is divided into a land part, the historical center built around the castle, and a sea part, the Marina di Schiavonea. The latter is both a seaside resort and an active fishing port. Its strange covered market, in neoclassical style, is noteworthy. The old town on the heights is one of the curiosities of this region because of its castle. It is difficult to find an identical one in the region. Completely restored (with a relative heaviness), it is one of the rare castles still inhabitable in Calabria.
