Its name evokes the softness of life and the luxury in which its inhabitants, the Wellness, and, more generally, the prosperous classes of ancient Greek. For Sibari (Sybaris; in Greek, Subaris) was the largest and most populated time in the cities of the Magna Grecia. Today, the ruins of the ancient city are the largest archaeological park of Calabria. But the current city, an important railway node, appears more like an active commercial and industrial centre than a busy city on the memory of its past. Moreover, the archaeological zone has undergone changes not only linked to the vicissitudes of history and recent urbanization, but also alluvial deposits by the rivers Sasso and Coscile. Since 1879, the state's excavations have led to the updating of various remains, mainly from Roman times.Founded at the end of the th century BC, Sybaris had its development to the agricultural wealth of the region and the exploitation of the money. It has become a major economic centre, trade with large italiotes and Etruscan cities. But this faste lasts only one time: in 510 BC, two centuries later, the beautiful Sybaris, already exposed to the whims of Sasso, was destroyed by his rival Crotone. The fate of the city changes radically in the next century under the Athenians: It is completely rebuilt and takes the name Thourioi (Thurium). From 194 BC, she welcomed the Roman colony of Gaul-Thurii. It survives until the last century. C.C.
