In the past, tar, which should have made the fortunes of the town and the whole region, had to transit through Stockholm, which stamped its seal on all exports from Finland. This monopoly, abolished in the 18th century, enabled the port and its merchants to trade directly with foreign countries. It was between 1750 and 1860 that the town of Kokkola became the most prosperous. Today, this small town of 47,734 inhabitants boasts a number of interesting sights, including the town hall, whose beautiful facade bears the signature of the architect Engel, and the old fishermen's quarter (Neristan), with its 19th-century wooden houses.
