Nykarleby, founded in 1620 by order of King Gustav II of Sweden, today has a population of 7,496 (2020), the vast majority of whom speak Swedish at first. Lovely painted wooden houses with finely carved balconies line the winding streets. The 1708 church, one of the most beautiful in the region, features stunning trompe l'oeil frescoes, splendid stained glass windows and 18th century organs. The windows behind the altar were painted by Lennart Segerstråhle in 1940. Further on, the railway track, closed since 1916, is restored for 2 km and offers visitors a picturesque ride on the old Emma locomotive.
