Houtskar, or Houtskari in Finnish, is located in the south-western part of the country, by the sea. It's a very wild island community: 1,600 islands, only around twenty of which are inhabited, with a total population of around 700. In summer, many Finns come to join their vacation homes, and the village comes alive a little more. Due to its geographical location, the island's isolation has caused its demographic decline - in 1924, the commune had a population of 1,955. A visit to the Houtskärs Skärgårdsmuseum is a must.
