93 km from Helsinki, Tammisaari (or Ekenäs in Swedish), founded in 1546 by the King of Sweden, is now 81% Swedish-speaking. Magnificent wooden houses, parks, well-kept gardens and a superb archipelago of some 1,300 islands are all good reasons to stop off. You'll love the old town with its narrow streets and colorful houses, the stone church of Tenhola and, of course, Raseborg Castle. This is one of the region's most important remnants of the late 14th century, and indeed the only Finnish example of a fully medieval castle.
