Located at the eastern end of the department of Cerro Largo, the Merin Lagoon is about 20 km from the border towns of Rio Branco (Uruguay) and Yaguarón (Brazil), at the mouth of the Yaguarón and Tacuarí rivers. Covering an area of 3,500 km2, it is considered one of the most important freshwater reserves in the world, classified as a World Freshwater Reserve by the FAO and a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. It is the second largest lake in South America, after the famous Lake Titicaca (Peru/Bolivia). Its fine sandy beaches and crystal clear water are home to a variety of birds such as storks, herons and swans.
