This former village, northwest of the Guadalajara metropolitan area, is now a city of more than one million people. It could be mistaken for a suburb of Guadalara, but Zapopan is a municipality in its own right. The city has several beautiful religious monuments: the Basilica de Zapopan, completed in 1892 in a baroque style, is the emblem of this residential area. The basilica houses a Virgin who is celebrated en masse on October 5 each year in a procession that has become the city's biggest festival. On this occasion, a great pilgrimage takes place from the Basilica of Guadalajara.
