Located 96 km from Rivera and 60 km from Tacuarembó, Minas de Corrales is known for its gold mines, which were very active in the last century. With Uruguay having virtually stopped exporting gold in 2018, the mines are now abandoned, but their mineral-rich underground tunnels can be visited, as well as the ruins of the still-standing infrastructure, which are quite impressive, via the guided tour organized by the Hotel Artigas on site. If you are interested in the history of mining in Uruguay, the Gold Museum is also a must-see on your visit to the area.
