Located on Ruta 5, 390 kilometers from Montevideo, the city of Tacuarembó is the capital of the eponymous department. The department is punctuated by valleys and hills, the cuchillas, and the Tacuarembó Chico river, a tributary of the Tacuarembó river, flows north of the city. The city is an important regional agro-industrial and traffic center. If you are passing through, visit the Museo de Carlos Gardel in Valle Edén. Also, not far from the city center, you can visit the Laguna de las Lavanderas, the Iporá resort, and the gruta de los helechos gigantes (the cave of giant ferns). In the capital, the Indian and Gaucho Museum and the Geosciences Museum are worth a visit.
