Sometimes swept by sandy winds, sometimes bathed in coastal fog, Swakopmund has grown since the day the Germans created a harbor in the middle of the desert to unload anchored ships at the end of the 19th century. With the help of its German provincial charm, Swakopmund has become a very popular seaside resort for the inhabitants of the capital. After crossing a dry and arid desert for hundreds of kilometers, Swakop' appears like a real mirage. Between green lawns and flowery gardens, modern buildings alternate with colonial architecture, and luxurious boutiques line the streets of the city center. One has the impression of being on another planet and to find a little civilization and the air of the sea. Today, the uranium mine of Rössing, the salt mines and guano, oyster farming and tourism have become the main sources of income. The more affluent have opted for villas with a view of the sea which have spread along the coast. The others live in the township of Mondesa, which stretches towards the desert. In recent years, the town has considerably increased its potential as a major tourist destination in Namibia. Many excursions are offered from Swakop' (mostly from Walvis Bay, but transfers can be arranged on request) and more and more tour operators are setting up shop here. The town is growing at a provincial pace and is popular with many Namibians and South Africans. Swakop' is the second largest city in the country after Windhoek and the first destination for activities and shopping.
