Cape Cross was discovered by the Portuguese navigator Diogo Cão, who had a stone cross erected there in 1486 to mark the southernmost point ever reached by Europeans in Africa. This cross was rediscovered by Lieutenant Commander Gottlieb Becker's mission in 1893, when the place was part of German South West Africa and he commanded the SMS Falke. It is impossible to miss this place, very well indicated and located 128 km from Swakopmund on the C34. If you get lost, you'll just have to get your bearings by the smell: the smell of the largest fur seal colony in the country will undoubtedly lead you to your destination!
