Halfway between Lausanne and Bern by train, 10 km from the Swiss freeway network, in the heart of the canton of Fribourg and French-speaking Switzerland, Romont is a lively, welcoming medieval hilltop town. Founded in 1239 by Peter II of Savoy, it still bears witness to the Middle Ages. The castle, protected by an imposing keep, is encircled by a parapet walk offering a fine view of the countryside and the Alps; there are ramparts and towers, fountains and an admirable collegiate church. See also the Capuchin convent and 17th-century church. Shops are in Romont's main street.
